About this game
METAL ASSAULT is a browser run-and-gun in the style of Metal Slug, written with HTML5 Canvas and vanilla JavaScript with no dependencies, no build step and no external assets: sprites, level, sound effects and music are generated in code. It can be played by opening index.html in a modern browser or at the author's hosted link.
Controls use arrow keys or WASD to move, Down/S to crouch, Up/W to aim upward, Space/K to jump, J/Z to shoot (auto knife at close range), L/X to throw a grenade (main cannon while riding the SLUG), Enter to start/confirm, Esc or P to pause, M to toggle audio and F1 for a developer god mode.
Two modes are available: Arcade Mission, a single roughly 7600-pixel-long mission ending in a final boss, and Survival, endless waves in an arena with its own high score. Enemies include rifle soldiers, grenadiers, melee attackers, elite bazooka troops, sandbag turrets, helicopters and tanks, with a gunship mini-boss and an armored fortress final boss that enrages below 35% HP and enters a second phase with mortar barrages below 60% HP. Players gain score multipliers through close-range chain combos, rescue bound prisoners for points and weapon crates, and use a pistol (infinite), heavy machine gun, spread, rocket and flame shot plus grenades. Rideable SLUG tanks have three armor points and can crush infantry; wooden crates and explosive red barrels are destructible and chain-react. Three lives come with respawn invincibility and an end-of-mission life bonus, and high scores are stored in localStorage. A settings panel offers master, SFX and music volume sliders, mute and music toggles, and remappable commands.
The game is an unofficial fan work inspired by the Metal Slug series and features characters such as General Morden.
