# Hearthsea

Hearthsea is a browser-based, Catan-style board game with 59 islands. The 3D island boards are built in three.js from map data; rules, bots and music are code. Art (17 character portraits, card art, 22 trophy statuettes) was made with GPT Image, and the code was written with help from Claude Code. Classic, Seafarers and Cities & Knights modes are free, and some islands require a pass. The author states it is not affiliated with CATAN GmbH.

## Description

Hearthsea is a Catan-style board game that runs in the browser. It has 59 islands; the boards are 3D, built in three.js from map data. The rules, bots and music are code, while the portraits, card art and trophy statuettes come from an image model (GPT Image), with rigged character sprites painted at 1024×1536 on transparent backgrounds. The newest bot, the Admiral, looks ahead at how each choice plays out and wins about 31% of games against three older Veteran bots, which win about 23.5%. Classic, Seafarers and Cities & Knights are free; some islands need a pass. The author states the game is not affiliated with CATAN GmbH.

## Original post

Made with AI: a Catan-style board game with 59 islands. What the image model painted and what stayed code

Hearthsea is a Catan-style board game that runs in the browser (not affiliated with CATAN GmbH). It's made with AI, and since this sub asks how, here's the split. The paintings come from an image model (GPT Image): the 17 character portraits, the card art and the 22 trophy statuettes in the slides. Characters are painted at 1024×1536 on a transparent background, and each one has a small motion rig, with the head, hands and props stored as fractions of the trimmed image. That bit me when I asked for new outfits. A repaint came back slightly wider and the rig put a hand in the wrong place. What fixed it was editing in place with "keep pose, hands, props, framing" in the prompt, then remapping the rig through the shared canvas. For a new set of art I pass existing game art in as a style reference, which keeps a new mode close to the rest of the game. The board itself isn't generated. The islands are 3D, built in three.js from the map data, and the rules, bots and music are code, written with help from Claude Code. The newest bot, the Admiral, looks ahead at how each choice plays out. Against three of the older Veteran bots it wins 31% of games, where a Veteran wins 23.5%. You can try it at hearthsea.com (Classic, Seafarers and Cities & Knights are free; some islands need a pass). If you've repainted rigged sprites with an image model, how did you keep the rig lined up? submitted by /u/herXhim_official to r/aigamedev [link] [comments]
