# Darklander I: Invaders of Undertown

A free, browser-based retro grid-based dungeon crawler inspired by Wizardry, Bard's Tale and Ultima III. Exploration uses a classic first-person view, while ranged attacks and combat switch to a top-down planar view. Built entirely in HTML/JavaScript/CSS, with no downloads, sign-ins or ads, and a quickstart guide available on itch.io.

## Description

During the pandemic, I started building a classic grid-based dungeon crawler, and I’ve been updating it in stolen moments ever since. It’s a love letter to the games I grew up with—Wizardry I, Bard's Tale, and Ultima III. Exploration uses a classic first-person perspective, but the game dynamically switches to a top-down planar view for ranged attacks and combat. It’s built entirely in HTML/JavaScript/CSS (graphics created using Inkscape and GiMP) and runs 100% free right in your browser (no downloads, sign-ins, or ads). Since this community knows the genre better than anyone, I’d love your thoughts: Is it clear enough how to get started (with or without the quickstart guide available on itch.io)? How do combat and party management feel compared to early 80s/90s classics? Any ideas of what I might add to make the game more immediately engaging? Are the old school graphics too old school? You can play it here: https://darklandermedia.itch.io/darklander-i-invaders-of-undertown

I built a free, browser-based retro DRPG inspired by Wizardry and Bard's Tale—would love feedback from any other crawlers of the classics out there
